For Darwin Science Was Inductive, Not Essentially Deductive

Responding to some “rationalistic” scientist who criticized what Darwin said about the importance, efficacy, and power of earthworms, Darwin said of the guy (according to Amy Stewart in her (go0d) book Earth Moved):

“He must have thus argued from inner consciousness, and not from observation.”

Nice. Conceptualization, induction, and dedication to the evidence of the senses beats making stuff up in your head, divorced from reality, any day.
