Sine, Cosine, and Tangent Basics

Schedule: This is a 1-hour class.

Format: Lecture with some class participation. We will learn concepts and practice them to attain the mastery we can in a short time. No grading; homework is optional.

Cost: $20 per person for a group class of 4 or more students; $70 for one-on-one tutoring.

Class Description. In this class, we will learn the three basic trig functions (or all six, time permitting) and practice using them. We’ll see how they are defined, how we can remember them, and how to use them in problems (and word problems, time permitting).

We will not be graphing them in a coordinate system as is done in trigonometry or precalculus. We’ll be looking at how the functions develop out of the geometry of triangles.

In this class we weill learn hrough lecture, interactive discussion, and interactive work. Come prepared to listen, take notes, answer some questions, ask some questions, do some work, and start to make a life-long habit of clear communication, writing, and thinking.

Learning Goals.
To know how to define sine, cosine, and tangent (and maybe cosine, secant, and cotangent).
To use sine, cosine, and tangent in calculating parts of triangles.
To know how to find a side or an angle of a triangle, using sine, cosine, and tangent.
To use trig functions in solving word problems (time permitting).

“Never before was my son as motivated and interested in a course. It was a delight to see and fun to hear him share about the lessons without prodding 😄”

“This class helped my son prepare for 9th grade Geometry Honors. He felt the teacher was very prepared, extremely knowledgeable, worked at a good pace for understanding and was thorough. There was time for questions and help if needed. He enjoyed taking this class.”

“Great overview of what geometry class will be like in the upcoming school year. It teaches you how to think about geometry, and the importance of logic and systematic thinking in general.”
