We teach the typical skills of logic and thinking skills — including deduction, argument analysis, independent thought, and using questions — but we dig deeper than most.
We teach:
1. Concept-formation: how we form our basic units of conceptual knowledge and how to use them well. How concretes keep concepts real.
2. Definition: how we identify what we are talking about and how to use them as tools of research.
3. Classification: how we identify the broader and narrower concepts around a given concept and how to use them to think and to live better.
4. Induction/generalization: how we form generalizations, how that helps us think more efficiently and powerfully, and how they make better deductive thought possible.
5. Hierarchy: how all conceptual knowledge is like a ladder, so you can teach, learn, and think more efficiently, and so you understand more fully what a thought depends on.
6. Integration: how all knowledge is interconnected, so you can be more creative and can better thrive.
We get into the real mechanics of reason. Deductive thought is parasitic on the generalizations and concepts we have formed or misformed, and can be no better than they. To dig down and get real, to get in touch with reality and not be stuck in someone else’s thoughts or in our own mind, we need to understand concept-formation and cognitive integration. And we can teach the deep relationships between mathematics and concepts.
